The Fall semester officially kicks off this week, and today feels like the calm before the storm.
Instead of cramming in last-minute summer tasks, I’m using today as a reset in the truest sense: slowing down, grounding myself, and choosing how I want to step into this semester.
Letting Go for a Fresh Start
Before I plan anything, I do a quick brain dump and journaling check-in. Here are the prompts I’m using today:
- What am I leaving behind from the summer as I head into the Fall?
- What felt like a big win this summer? What felt more challenging?
- What do I want to prioritize this Fall semester?
This always helps me clear some mental space and let go of any lingering stress or guilt about things I didn’t get done.
Reset + Semester Prep
Once my mind feels clearer, I shift into my usual Sunday reset routine – just with a new semester twist:
- Reviewing my calendar & priorities. I’m leaving more open space than usual since I know this first week will be hectic and I’m sure things will come up. I’m also mapping out the full month with new meeting times, courses, and other commitments, so nothing sneaks up on me.
- Reflecting on energy, self-care, and balance. Instead of only looking back at last week, I’m thinking about the last couple of months. How has my energy and mood shifted? What helped? What drained me? Recognizing these patterns helps me set myself up better for what’s ahead.
- Making small adjustments. I’m asking: What can I put in place now to support myself as the semester unravels? Scheduling intentional breaks is currently at the top of my list.
Grounding in Small Routines
I know how quickly September can spiral into overwhelm. My anchor this year will be small, non-negotiable routines: weekly Sunday resets, movement and nourishment, and intentional rest time. These are simple ways I find a sense of stability when everything else feels chaotic.
Academic New Year Reset
In a way, tonight feels like the New Year’s Eve of academia. Instead of resolutions, I’m setting intentions. Mine is balance. I want to chase goals without burning out, stay productive without losing sight of my wellbeing, and keep showing up for myself alongside my work.
Whether your Sunday is slow or busy, I hope you can carve out a few minutes to reset before the week (and semester) ahead. The way we start often sets the tone for what follows – and choosing to start with intention is one of the kindest things we can do for our future selves.
Here’s to balance – one Sunday reset at a time.
