best things about graduate school

Grad school is often talked about in terms of stress, uncertainty, long hours, and burnout. While things are certainly real, they’re not the whole picture. Over time, there are little parts of academic life that start to stand out – the small privileges and moments that make the experience feel meaningful.

I like to remind myself of the good side of this degree every once in a while. Here are a few of my favourite things about grad school.

The Best Parts of Grad School

1. The freedom to follow curiosity

There aren’t many jobs that encourage you to read things simply because you find them interesting. One of the best parts of grad school is that letting your curiosity lead can actually be part of the work.

You can spend an afternoon reading, going down a conceptual rabbit hole, or exploring a question simply because it’s compelling. In many other jobs, these kinds of activities might be considered distractions – but in grad school, they’re often just part of the process.

2. The rhythm of semesters

Academic life has built-in reset points. The typical 9-5 lifestyle doesn’t really have seasons. You can take holidays and schedule time away, but there aren’t clear moments where one chapter closes and another begins.

In grad school, each semester feels like a fresh start. A new term brings new courses, new goals, and a chance to rethink how you want to approach the months ahead. In a way, it feels like having multiple “new years” throughout the year.

3. Long conversations about ideas

Grad school creates space for conversations about ideas that go deeper than most everyday discussions.

Seminars, meetings with supervisors, and even spontaneous conversations with lab mates or classmates that can turn into thoughtful debates, brainstorming sessions, or moments where a new perspective shifts how you see a topic. These conversations can be energizing in a way that reminds you why you chose this path in the first place.

4. The flexibility of academic time

The flexibility of grad school schedules can create challenges, but it also offers a level of autonomy that most jobs don’t.

There’s often space to structure your work in ways that suit how you think best. It allows for things like midday walks, study sessions with friends, or shaping your own work rhythm throughout the week. Once you learn how to work with that flexibility, it can become one of the most valuable parts of academic life.

5. Watching your thinking change

One of the most rewarding parts of grad school is realizing that your thinking has changed.

Over time, grad school reshapes how you read, question, and understand things. Papers that once felt dense become easier to navigate. Questions become sharper. Connections between ideas become clearer.

It happens slowly – often so gradually you barely notice it at first – but over time you start to see how much your intellectual perspective has grown.

Grad school isn’t easy, and it certainly isn’t always balanced. But alongside the challenges, there are also small privileges that make the experience meaningful in ways that are easy to miss when you’re focused on deadlines and expectations.

Sometimes it’s worth pausing long enough to notice them.
